I hope I am doing nothing "improper" by posting this message.

I run a Bulletin board website in Australia. Approx 4weeks after the site was created the site was inundated with "Albanian" speaking spammers using Russian and Polish internet addresses. The spammers keep posting pornographic material and also links that dont work. The spammers delight in alleging that their location is in the USA.

My site is obviously being targetted as if I delete just a name- the name reappears a day later. I am having some success banning IPs and particular email companies.

However I am interested to know WHY they are doing it. Obviously schoolkids may have nothing else to do - but I have also been told that they may be trying to hijack site emails- what financial incentive is there in doing this ???

Can anyone be of assistance ???

It sounds like spam bots to me. There's not really much you can do except keep banning IP ranges and email accounts. We have to do it regularly here to keep the forums clean. They work by putting up a link on a forum so the Google bots will pick it up and the site will show up in Google searches. It's all done automatically through software. We had a lot of them all claiming to be from 90210 (or other similar zip codes), then ones claiming to be a doctor. Most have an ICQ number and Albanian as the language in their profiles. Watch out for ones that have MSN or Yahoo as their URL as well.
