I just opened this topic, because I was wondering about scambaiting...

Recently I have been scammed by Olga from Bugulma. She is very professional and is impossible to be traced back and on top off that: My guts say that she could be having ties to the Russian Maffia.

Now, I was wondering and please forgive me for asking: But how dangerous is scam-baiting really??

Scambaiting is as dangerous as you allow it to be or as safe as you make it. As long as you follow the basic guidelines then there's no way a scammer could ever track you down. Things like not using an email address that shows your IP address or giving out any of your real life details are the basics you need to know.

Wayne,About using an e-mail that doesn't show your IP.Is there anything wrong with using a free service like Yahoo or MSN? As much as I know about it that would only go as far as the ISP's IP,Correct? Maybe an experienced hacker could go further but I don't see a scammer wasting the time for one.I stop contact after the money letter or translation agency letter if I go that far.Any forseeable danger/problems with that?
One thing I didn't see you mention was regarding photo's.They almost always have a letter or 2 wanting your pic.,I NEVER send mine and if I do I have some that are as fake as they are. Wink Another thing is them wanting to call you on the phone.THAT is not a good idea giving your land-line number too much info can be retreived with it.I tell them I only have a cell and don't have overseas capability, that has ended that right there.

Your IP address could show up as hundreds of miles away, or it could show up practically on your doorstep. Try clicking on

to see where yours shows you as. If it's far enough away, then you can use any email provider, but if it shows up fairly close then use something like Google. Phone numbers can be gotten around by signing up for an online one or using an untraceable mobile phone. Different countries have different solutions to this. Photos of D list celebs in natural poses are always good to use if you want to send them. Get a small collection of them together ready just in case.
